Barcelona cannot register a new Gavi contract and he can only play in the old number 1 shirt. In September, the club announced that the prodigy Gavi had signed a new long-term contract, but now the Catalan giants have been informed that La Liga will not ratify deal.
Barcelona are reportedly unable to sign prodigy Gavi’s new contract as their well-documented financial problems have come to light. The La Liga giants are billions of pounds in debt and have been forced to use various financial tricks to meet the salary cap in their category. Problems haven’t stopped Xavi from moving on for the future of the club, but he’s running into problems trying to secure Gavi’s future.
The 18-year-old has been a revelation for Barca since he first joined their squad under Ronald Koeman. He continued to be a key player under Xavi and it was announced in September that he had received a new long-term contract.
But now Marca is reporting that Barça are having some difficulties. La Liga informed them that they could not register a new Gavi deal. The midfielder received the number 6 shirt upon signing this contract, but he will be forced to wear the number 30 shirt if he takes the field.
In a “serious setback” for the club, La Liga ruled that it was not in compliance with the salary cap clauses. This comes as a surprise to Barca as the departures of Memphis Depay and Gerard Piqué are still not enough to sign Gavi.
Barça are still not complying with Article 101, which stipulates that new contracts take into account the squad limit for the following year, and Article 93.6, which states that clubs with exceptional income must submit a financial plan for the next two seasons.
As a result of non-compliance with these two articles, the club cannot register new deals for Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Inaka Peña or Alejandro Balde. They will now have to wait until the summer before finally signing Gavi up as a first team player.
When Gavi’s new contract is finally ratified, the midfielder will be tied to Camp Nou until 2026 with a £1bn buyout clause. He has made 26 appearances this season and Xavi has praised him for his lead role in Barça’s victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final.
The restrictions preventing Barca from ratifying Gavi’s new contract also mean that Xavi will not be able to sign any new players this month. The Barça boss is said to have resigned himself to ending the season without any additions to his current roster.
“He was gifted with leadership qualities. He shows courage and rage when he plays football and that’s something special. I have already said this many times, but I never tire of praising him. I hope he never stops acting like that because he has no limits.”
